Report Summary

Northern Exposed: Nortel Networks — A Strategic Analysis is a close examination of Nortel’s product lines, opportunities and risks in the aftermath of its accounting miscues, and at a time when its biggest customers are on the threshold of a major network transformation that will last for the next two decades.

Nortel Networks installed the first digital CO switch in the U.S. in 1977 and, with that as a foothold, has become a major force in the global telecommunications market. Now, with the industry on the brink of its next major technology transformation, from circuit-to-packet, Nortel may be one of the best-positioned vendors in the telecom business. The company fields a comprehensive product line that can support the carriers’ network transformations from the POTS-Era to the Internet-Age. Nortel offers a broader portfolio of broadband, optical, packet, enterprise, and wireless solutions than any other vendor.

But, Nortel has been rocked by an accounting scandal that has cleared out its executive suite and targeted it for SEC and Department of Justice investigations. The accounting irregularities mainly affected reported expenses and profits for previous periods. Currently, sales are holding up, and major customers have not indicated that they are ready to switch horses just yet. It remains to be seen if these developments will interrupt Nortel’s momentum, or merely temporarily distract it.
